The problem is what we do about assigning responsibility. If anything is a symptom of insanity, murder has to be. But the justice system isn't about improving society, it's about expressing emotion at people we're mad at. If we were really concerned with minimizing murder, we'd have solid mental health programs and we'd reconstruct the justice system to reflect modern psychology. Psychology isn't about excusing people, it's too bad that it has gotten that reputation. Yeah, a lot of the ways that psychology is applied are pointless or even detrimental. But the same could be said for physics and I don't think physics should be thrown out as a subject of study just because we have nuclear bombs. Murder happens because the murderer has a severely distorted understanding of reality, and correcting the distortion should be prioritized. We can keep getting mad at bad behavior, or we can do things to prevent it and/or sustainably change it.

I'm a little late on this party barge, but I don't think it's a matter of immorality (vice). There are undoubtedly people that viciously shove their face from self-hate. However, I think the self-loathing usually follows the action which resulted in the person feeling like a social outcast in the first place. And, I'll argue with ANYONE that thinks fat-hating isn't the one last allowable hate activity in America.

Anyway, away from the politics of fatness. From a biological and evolutionary perspective, the US's obesity problem should be a shiny badge of glory. If there were a massive worldwide famine, I fully believe the US would come out ahead in terms of citizen survivors because we've been allowed to eat super calorie dense foods for so long that the majority is now carrying (in our current context) unnecessary fat deposits. In history, the idea of a fast, calorie dense food was grub worms. Now, we have burgers, fries, cheese, etc, all readily available. Not to criticize your argument Justin, but when you examine the wealthy class in any country, obesity becomes a glaring fact--especially in the youth. It's not because they're subscribing to a US vice, they're subscribing to a US way of getting easy calories. It's not surprising either, you have loads of ghrelin pushing you to eat all the time. When you eat "bad foods," it pushes harder--if you ate 300 calories of spinach and a 300 calorie McDonald's hamburger, it'd be obvious what our issue is. That's a metric asston of spinach which you could eat all day and it'd look like you were fat because you'd be eating non-stop all day. One McDonald's hamburger is nothing. A vice is an immoral behavior, fat people are largely (no pun intended) not gorging themselves so much as eating foods that aren't really in line with our biology.
I imagine it like this-- "Your country solved hunger with calorie-dense food that can be eaten at moderate portions and still put fat on you, buuuuuuut you don't need that so you're all gonna get diabetes instead. And then, at that point, you're just gonna eat with vengeance since you'll be a social outcast. Congratulations! Yay!"
